Paris Photo: The Life and Times of a Hungarian Ice Cream Truck

There were plenty of photography shows outside the walls of Paris Photo, and one of the most interesting sets of work I saw was at the Hungarian Institute of Paris. Among a group show of contemporary Hungarian photographers, the work of Szabolcs Barakonyi stood out. His series "Tell your Mommy, bring some money!" looks at the adventures of an ice cream truck as it makes the rounds. It's often the case that when photographers take a close look at seemingly minor subjects, the resulting photographs reveal a small universe. This seems to be the case in Barakonyi's photographs, where the ice cream truck is sometimes a backdrop for bicycle tricks, a vehicle (as it were) for studying people, or the basis for an abstract composition. From looking at his photographs, it's clear that Barakonyi has an excellent eye for composition, but he also selected his subject well.
