On the Wall: Charlotte Dumas's Anima
A Dutch photographer explores where and how we put animals to work
Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas specializes in images of animals, portraying their use and relationships to the human world. This collection, her first solo exhibition in the United States, includes Dumas’s dramatic portraits of the burial horses of Arlington National Cemetery, which she photographed between 2010 and 2012. “I investigate how we tend to use and regard animals for our own purposes, both literally and symbolically,” Dumas explains. “And the characteristics that we like to take to heart from them, and the ones we attribute to them.”
